Course Overview
Developing a strong all-round proficiency in English is an essential asset for global citizens in the twenty-first century. English opens doors for further study, work and personal connections with people from other countries. It also brings great personal satisfaction and, as such, studying English is a confidence-building pursuit for most learners. Aspiring learners of English need both structured and unstructured learning opportunities, a combination of both direct instruction and freer practice. Studying at an English school with motivated teachers, an international cohort of classmates and a dynamic environment is an ideal way to develop a high-level of English proficiency. The General English Program course gives students a firm grounding in the vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar of English. These areas of proficiency are combined and integrated with the four macro skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. These areas of proficiency form the basis of the learner aims, objectives and outcomes for the course. To achieve these learning outcomes, the needs of the students must be met by aligning the learning outcomes of the course with the content/textbook/syllabus, the pedagogical methodology and the assessment. The learning aims, objectives and outcomes are in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Students who complete each level of the course are considered to have met the proficiency standards set out at each level of the CEFR
Learner Cohort
Students enter at different levels depending on their proficiency across the four macro-skills when they enrol. They are not native speakers of English but want to learn the language. Students come from a range of countries and, as a result, may have variations in their approach to class, expected classroom norms and learner beliefs. Students come from a range of ages, but all are at least 18. Students have the desire to participate in classes that not only develop their language skills but are also enjoyable. Students’ motivation for learning includes:
- Student visa holders who want to improve their English for further study in Australia
- Tourist visa holders who want to improve their travel experience
- Working Holiday visa holders who want to study English but also do part time work.
Often these students study English first to get their language skills up to working level. Some students who enrol in the General English course seek to prepare for further study at an English-medium tertiary education institution and, as such, need to improve their overall proficiency in English and develop skills specific to academic life. Gaining a strong proficiency in the Vocabulary, Pronunciation and Grammar of English is a key step in that process.
